Supporting learners and facilitating learning through work placement

The challenge of integrating facilitative pedagogy and communication technologies

Any system of support for learners on work/clinical placement must consider the needs and interests of the learner as a complete person. This value based principle begs the question what are the needs of students when they are on placement? And what sort of ‘support’ in the sense of preparation, ongoing relationships and pedagogic interactions and resources really does help, enable and empower them while they are on placement? There is a research agenda here that needs to be engaged with.

Possible questions:

  • What principles are we using to underpin the design of our systems of support and engagement?
  • How do we know what the needs are of different participants and that these needs are being met?
  • What technologies are we currently using and why? andwhat additional technologies might be used for what purpose?
  • What pedagogic strategies and interventions are we using and why? and what additional strategies might be used for what purpose?
  • What tools are we using and why? and what additional tools might be used and for what purposes?
  • How are these things connected and integrated?
