Developing an extensible student-led resource of knowledge and
experience to facilitate enquiry and engagement
Dr Philip Jackson, Director of Media Engineering, Machine Audition, CVSSP University of Surrey
Within the context of an academic curriculum that is largely generic to electronic engineering, we have sought ways to give our media engineering students the means to develop their specialist knowledge and learn some of the practical issues associated with media production. This project aims to fill the gap between what can be taught in formal lectures and labs and the experience of working in a production environment, enabling the development of professional capabilities and attitudes relevant to the media industry. The idea involves the construction of a wiki and media content to provide essential know-how through a student voice. The wiki allows the pool of knowledge to grow and evolve over time, while being specific to the facilities and equipment in our department. This talk will give a picture of a work in progress and report on the latest developments as students grapple with the challenges and opportunities that this medium affords for extending their learning.
